The most lucrative Nursing programs, commonly known as Mental Health, Child Health, and Adult Care, are taught and some schools offer students the flexibility to choose a branch after they have started a course. The learning experience is divided into 50% theory and 50% practical experience as their attendance is shared between the lecture halls and care centres.
At the beginning of the learning program, students are taught the basic precepts and concepts of the Nursing profession and might be allowed to take other healthcare modules, such as pharmacy, midwifery, occupational therapy and social work for diversification and competency.
The application procedures for the Nursing program differs with each country. For instance, in the UK, students can apply for either of these following study programs;
Bachelor’s Degree which is a 4 – 5 years study program. On normal grounds, high-school students can apply for this program provided they took science course subjects in their SSCE exam. In recent years, other international students with science academic backgrounds, from a tertiary institution, can apply for a second BSc degree in the Nursing degree. Students are strongly encouraged to have at least a 3 months work experience in Care Centres; either in a hospital or NGO as a full-time or part-time employee. This will help prepare you for the required skill-set for the Nursing profession beforehand.
The Top-Up Program is primarily designed as a conversion course for students who have previously taken a pre-registration Nursing degree such as the common Diploma certificate from a school of Nursing. Students who apply commence classes in their final year and graduate within a year.
The Master’s program is a postgraduate degree within a time frame of 12 – 24 months. On normal grounds, the one year program is designed for students who already have a BNSC degree while the 2 years Masters is for other students who have previous academic degrees in a Health-Science related course. Students are strongly encouraged to have at least 3 months of work experience in Care Centres; either in a hospital or NGO as a full-time or part-time employee. This will help prepare you for the required skill-set for the Nursing profession beforehand.
A student’s clinical placement will depend on their course majors. For example, if you apply for a Child Nursing degree, your placement will be at a Child Hospital or the Child Ward of a Hospital which can be paid or unpaid. International students who wish to build their Nursing profession are required to take the Overseas Nursing Programme (ONP) as part of their studies which enables one to become registered nurses in the UK to work in either the NHS or the private sector.
