President Muhammadu Buhari finally broke his silence on the ongoing #EndSARS protests across the country by addressing the nation.
The President assured the protesters that their voices have been heard ‘loud and clear’ and urged them to discontinue their demonstrations. However, to the disappointment of many, the President did not talk about the shootings at the Lekki Toll Gate area of Lagos State, an issue many had expected him to address. Instead, he began his speech by warning violent demonstrators who have highjacked the protests and said his administration’s quick response to scrap SARS was viewed by protesters as a sign of weakness.
President Buhari also defended his administration’s effort in alleviating poverty, one of the factors that fuelled the protests. The President said the salaries of police officers, which is one of the demands of the protesters are being reviewed upward. President Buhari also advised the international community, especially those who have condemned the incident in Nigeria to always get their facts right before speaking. He advised against further protests.
What’s your perception of the President’s address?
